Welcome to our latest newsletter highlighting news, competitions and events of relevance to chemicals and industrial biotechnology. This month we are highlighting the Imagine Chemistry programme which has opened for submissions, and the Science Technology Facilities Council's (STFC) Bridging for Innovators (B4I) programme, which could help chemical and IB companies to work with STFC’s science facilities.

Using whisky residues to fuel the bioeconomy

Celtic Renewables has announced that it will build a whisky residue biofuel plant at Grangemouth, which will produce over half a million litres of biofuel each year. The commercial demonstrator plant will produce Biobutanol, the new advanced and sustainable biofuel that is a direct replacement for petrol and diesel.

Applications are now open to take part in the 2018 BioBase4SME Innovation Bootcamp, which will take place on 3rd-8th June in Hawkhills. Successful applicants will receive €7,000 worth of specialist training, fully funded by the project, plus follow-on coaching for a year after the workshop.

Health & Life Sciences and Emerging & Enabling Technologies Competition Briefing Events

Innovate UK is to invest up to £19 million to support innovation that offers significant changes in productivity and cutting-edge innovation. The competition has 2 strands - strand 1 is for health and life sciences projects (including advanced biosciences, advanced therapies (cell and gene therapies), precision medicine, medicines discovery) and strand 2 is for emerging and enabling technologies projects (including graphene & biofilms). A further £12 million is available to fund Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. 

Please Note: The afternoon sessions of the event will be split into separate strands to discuss the scope further including a Q&A session. Please only register for one strand per delegate.

Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (BBSRC NIBB) Phase II

Expression of interest deadline: 24.01.18 at 16:00

BBSRC, in association with EPSRC, has announced a call of up to £10 million to fund a second phase of Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (BBSRC NIBB). They intend to fund a number of Networks, of varying scales, focusing on a broad range of fundamental and strategic challenges and questions facing the IBBE area. Networks will operate for up to 5 years and are expected to become self-sustaining beyond this.
