The Julian
Morris Travel Award honours the contributions of Professor Julian Morris
FREng*, formerly of Newcastle University, to process analysis and process
control. CPACT introduced this award to allow a Doctorate student to attend a
conference and/or spend some time working with another research group in a
country different to where they are studying.
The winner of the 2023 Award is Harry Kay from the University of
Manchester.
Harry said “I will be living in Berlin, Germany
for 6 months for a collaboration with an experimental partner, the first task
force (Machine Learning for Bioprocess Forecasting and Control and Improved
Enzyme Screening) in the KIWI-biolab. This arrangement will begin on the 1st of
March 2024 and end on the 1st of September 2024. The purpose of
this will be to contribute by developing a symbolic regression-based design of
experiments framework for the automatic discovery of enzymatic reaction
kinetics through the use of state-of-the-art experimental facilities offered at
the KIWI-biolab.
Using this designed
methodology, we can automatically guide experimental design and generate
knowledge for the investigated enzymes and therefore, can accelerate the
screening of such enzymes. The award money will be used to provide assistance
with living (rent, travelling, and nourishment) as well as for any other
circumstances that occur. This award money will provide a substantial
contribution to allowing me to engage with this collaboration which will
diversify my skillset and provide me with the necessary skills to further my
future career.
This
will also be the first international collaboration/research event that I have
been involved in since the beginning of my PhD”.
We hope that you enjoy your six months in Berlin!
